NARI BEST IN SHOW 2017
NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REMODELERS
Michels Homes Earns Four Contractor of the Year Awards From NARI, MN Chapter North Oaks, MN (December 4, 2017) – Michels Homes is proud to announce that the firm earned four Contractor of the Year Awards at the 21st Annual National Association of the Remodeling Industry, Minnesota Chapter, Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards in Minneapolis, on Thursday, November 16. The firm’s Medicine Lake remodel received a Gold Award in the interiors category and their Car Showroom and Outdoor Living project received a Gold Award in the special element category, a Silver Award in the outdoor living category, and the Best in Show Award. The CotY Awards recognize excellence in the remodeling industry. Over 80 entries were submitted for this year’s awards. Independently judged by remodelers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the winners showcase quality in craftsmanship and service to homeowners in Minnesota. CotY Awards are granted to remodeling contractors based on how their submitted project enhanced the existing structure functionally and aesthetically, how they overcame challenges, and if they met their client’s goals. Michels Homes’ project submission that received the highest honor of the night, Best in Show, was their car showroom remodel. The scope of work for the project consisted of converting the unused indoor pool into a car storage space for the owner’s collection of luxury vehicles. To successfully complete this project, the team had to overcome a number of challenges. The greatest obstacles of working on this 1960s-built home was dealing with the modifications the four previous owners had made. Every owner had altered some aspect of the home making it a puzzle! A significant portion of the project was to remove the posts within the indoor pool room. To do so, the firm engineered and installed 2, 20” steel beams across the existing pool area. By utilizing the shoring and beams for 20 plus days, the team was able to remodel the space and not damage the flooring above the room. Icynene insulation and a separate HVAC system with mechanical ventilation were installed to prevent automobile fumes co-mingling with the home’s air. The updated space features a gas fireplace, 18’ stacking patio door, which tucks away in the wall out of sight, a polished concrete floor, high quality audio, ceiling beams, and a car carousel, which operates both as a space to highlight the owner’s car collection and the functional purpose to turn cars around to exit the showroom. “Our members consistently produce quality work and this project was no exception,” said Jason Myrlie, CKBR, President of NARI-MN, J.
